Assignment 3-1 The Hobbit

In our culture today, it sometimes appears that one is just not enough. We want more of what we like and it is the same when it comes to our favorite movies and TV shows. Of course it is easier with TV as we watch episode after episode, and season after season. But with movies we just get the one, unless they make it a trilogy, or maybe they make a movie that follows up with part II, part III, or even part IV. In the same breath, as we expect and want more, the production companies are willing to bring us what we want. If it is popular culture today, they are willing to make the money and bring it to an audience. We are also seeing popular culture brought to us in fast forward. This has become almost a norm of high revenue producing movies. Production companies want to bring two part movies out with back to back release dates. So they film sequels back to back for quick releases.

Are you a “Lord of the Rings” fan? If yes, good news! Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit is finally here.

(Molgaard, 2010)

“Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit finally has been greenlit with production starting in February according to an individual close to the film” (JimmyO, 2010). Peter Jackson is set to write, direct and produce a two part series with a date of first release on December 19, 2012. This is great news for Lord of the Ring fans. And even better, for the fans of 3D, it is also slated to be released in 3D. (Molgaard, 2010).

The movie is based on a prequel to Lord of the Rings and will be 60 years previous to the Lord of the Rings era. It appears to be about Bilbo Baggins and his venture when he met Gollum and found the ring. I really am surprised that they are not trying to include the original two hobbits from the Lord of the Rings, Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee. Their characters were so fun to watch. Some of the actors that are rumored to be returning are Ian McKellen (Gandolph), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Hugo Weaving (Aragon), and Andy Serkis (Gollum). (Molgaard, 2010).
